I will have to add this book to the very short list of books about vampires that I actually like. I'm not usually a vampire fan, and I wouldn't have read this one if it hadn't been by Robin McKinley, whose previous work I like and admire.

Overall, I was very impressed with the characterization, the world, and the story. The only quibble I have is with the ending--one thread, the main thread, was resolved neatly if not quite tied off, but there was a lot of stuff which was not resolved. All the really cool characters and relationships that made this so much more than the standard story a straight summary would suggest were left hanging. It seemed a conscious choice on the part of the author--at one point very near the end the narrator reflects on how there is still a lot of repercussions from her adventure that will take time to work out. I wanted to see that working out. In fact, I think a sequel would be quite interesting. I don't think it's likely though--McKinley doesn't usually do sequels, and...(pause to look things up) in fact she's stated that it's unlikely in a note on her website. But one can always hope.
